10 Cool And Unique Watches
Timepieces have been an indicator of style and class since they were invented. Watches are awesome, and people agree so much that there are literally thousands of crazy unique watches available today. Do you prefer an elegantly understated circle on your wrist? Great. A boxy, modernist watch? No problem. Perhaps you want something slightly less conventional and more multi-faceted, like a mini-pinball machine time teller? Hell yes.
Today, you cannot only find watches that epitomize chic, you can also get your hands on styles that make your arm look like a sudoku puzzle. Susan Glaspell once said, “A clock is a little machine that shuts us out from the wonder of time.” If Susan had seen these time-keeping bad boys she undoubtedly would have further added “…except for these bitchin’ watches, which are a totally rad wonder unto themselves.”
10. ELEENO WEBTIME SERIES ELITE
A trend that you’ll begin to notice with these watches is that for many of them, you have to re-learn how to tell time to use them. If that sounds like too much work but you wouldn’t mind having a stylish paperweight for your wrist, The Eleeno WebTime SE is made of stainless steel and comes in Aqua and Satsuma (orange resin), which would admittedly still make a pretty sharp paperweight.
9. REVEAL WATCH
What is such a “normal” watch doing on this list? Well, there’s more to being unique than just aesthetic shock value. This traditional watch face stands out by using a rotating cover that reveals the actual time, so only a few numbers are visible at a time. The Reveal’s claim to fame is that it’s the only analog watch that reads like a digital one.
8. KISAI RPM ACETATE
Leave it to a Japanese company called Tokyo Flash to create the biggest collection of unique, inventive watches. RPM Acetate is only one such watch whose face changes and continually flows according to the noise-level of your surroundings. If you need a good conversation starter at the nightclub, this is the watch for you.
7. NOOKA ZUB ZOT
Nooka has an entire collection of dot based watches, each one does a great job of making you put a lot of extra effort into trying to figure out what time it is. That being said, they’re good looking watches.
6. BRITTO ART BINARY WATCH COLLECTION
A pop art lover’s wet dream.
5. NIXON NEWTON
For a watch that looks more like a color palette selector, it’s is supposed to be easy to read. Not sure I’d agree, but it’s definitely unique.
4. LED WATCH BY HIRONAO TSUBOI
Probably the most pretty and practical entry on this list, the LED Watch tells time by highlighting the spaces between the watch links.
3. MOMENTS IN TIME BY DOMINIC WILCOX
Part of an exhibition done by Dominic Wilcox, this timepiece is absolutely perfect for those of us who like to tell time while simultaneously looking at a sculpture.
2. CABESTAN WINCH TOURBILLON VERTICAL
I’m not even going to try to figure out how to tell time with this, all I know is the design is derived from a nautical machine called a capstan. Complete with a winding device on the strap, I have a feeling you better know what you’re getting into before slapping this on your body.
1. CYRUS KLEPCYS MARS
The Cyrus Klepcys might not look that unique on first glance but don’t be fooled. What it lacks in aesthetic distinctiveness it more than makes up for in mind boggling mad scientistry. See that little red ball in the watch face? That’s a scale model of Mars rotating at the exact same rate as the actual planet. There are only 66 of these watches in existence, so its unlikely you’ll ever be able to get your hands on one, but make sure to get your drooling out of the way now. I doubt the owner would appreciate getting your saliva on his or her mini Mars.
