The Carnival Of Binche – Binche, Belgium

This weird carnival occurs on Shrove Tuesday and attracts around 1,000 local males who dress in bizarre and scary-looking masks and wooden shoes. The whole event is supposed to ward off the evil spirits. I think it will probably ward off everyone!

With “the intent to conquer new spaces for living in harmony with nature”, the Rome-based Italian architectural firm Giancarlo Zema Design Group (GZDG) is designing what is set to be the first “elaborate, semi-submerged luxury resort project in a protected marine area on the coast” in Qatar.

At an estimated cost of US$500 million, the resort – dubbed ‘Amphibious 1000′ – will resemble a mammoth water creature sprawling out from the land and into the sea. It will be divided into two sections accordingly.

The land-based section will contain the resorts central tower, which will in turn house an impressive panoramic restaurant. Offices, underwater marine galleries, a central marine park, floating walkways and residential buildings will form semi-circles to surround the tower. The main lobby will be centralised around an interactive sea life museum and will feature large aquariums, galleries and water exhibitions, and a passageway made entirely out of glass will lead guests to an underwater observatory.

The sea-based section will boast four semi-submerged hotels designed to resemble anchored super-yachts, and each of these hotels will consist of a whopping seventy-five luxury suites. Underwater passageways with views of the central marine park will provide access to the activities zones and connect the hotel rooms. The hotel rooms themselves are to be positioned around the perimeter of the building and even offer private terraces. For those incapable of – or simply unwilling to try – getting around Amphibious 1000 with their own two feet and heartbeat, electric vehicles will be provided as a means of guest transportation throughout all of the facilities in the resort.

For those with families, those who are incredibly generous towards their nearest and dearest friends, or those who simply have an awful lot of money burning holes in their pockets and like to maintain privacy, fear not – Amphibious 1000 can accommodate you! There will be eighty floating (but anchored) suites known as ‘Jellyfish’ available for hire, each with the ability to host up to six people throughout five floors. The highest point of the suite sits at 5.6m (18.3ft) above sea level and is known as the “relaxation room“. Sleeping quarters and bathroom facilities occupy the next floor at 3.5m (11.5ft) above sea level. 1.4m (4.6ft) above sea level sees the area dedicated to ‘daytime use’ and houses a kitchen and bathroom. Heading below deck, the next floor – semi-submerged at 0.8m (2.6ft) – further guest rooms and restrooms are to be found. Finally, the lowest level – coming in at 3m (9.8ft) below sea level (not quite at the bottom of the deep, blue sea but close enough for the likes of yours truly) – will be comprised entirely of a private aquarium lounge with stunning views of an artificial reef bed.

As of yet, there’s been no word on estimated construction/completion dates, but it is being eagerly anticipated by sun and sea enthusiasts globally.

The creation of the Maldivian government, Troon Golf and Waterstudio, a Dutch architecture firm, this $520 million floating golf course is designed to combat a big problem: The Maldives are about to sink below the ocean.

A bit like with Dubai World  - a series of islands shaped like countries – the course will be made up of a series of islands with multiple holes on each island. To get between islands there will be underwater tunnels that look like something out of SeaWorld and the islands will be anchored to the seabed with cables to stop them floating away! The course will be ready by the end of 2013.

Following on from our Knight Amor Hoodie article, Maskull Lasserre has switched the focus from upper body to lower body. The Canadian artist has created animal footprint shoes as part of his Outliers project. His shoes are fitted with carved rubber soles with the idea being to mimic the footprints of bears, deer, moose and rabbits. The footprints created make it look as if animals have wandered into urban areas! Would you wear these? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
