The ad features a lucky fan who whist on vacation, receives a ticket to the UEFA Champions League Final. The only problem is that he is on the other side of the world and faces a race against the clock to get to the match. He manages to overcome every obstacle put in his way and finally earns his reward - a pitch side seat at Wembley, arriving just before kick-off. Watch out for some persuasive skills on show as the guy uses his finger soccer skills to convince customs to let him through the border. The brand’s fans can play a pinball game featuring elements of the advert. Players can compete against each other to earn bragging rights and social kudos. The video is well shot and makes the Origin of Cool crew wish we had got the ticket!

You can watch the commercial here, play the game at the end of it and tweet to Clarence Seedorf who will be representing Heineken’s latest advertising element. Go to the Facebook page for more info: http://apps.facebook.com/roadtothefinalgame

Over the past few years there have been frequent discussions on poker forums and amongst players about whether or not the “games are dying.”

While it would be impossible to argue that games have gotten tougher to beat, it’s far more accurate to say that online poker is evolving – NOT dying. So rather than asking yourself if the games are dying, it’s a lot wiser and more profitable to ask if YOU are evolving alongside the games.

What can you do to keep up?
To stay ahead of opponents, there are a number of things every online poker player should do. First of all, engage in frequent discussions with other players. Pick apart the details of hands, and leave no detail untouched. Sometimes the biggest problems with your game can be things you take for granted. For example, you may look back at a hand where you had to make a particularly tough decision on the river without thinking enough about what happened before that put you in that situation.

Secondly, make use of training tools available online. While books can improve your game, they’re static and aren’t updated frequently. Content found on training sites and forums is put out all the time and much more up-to-date. You should also use poker HUD software like PokerTracker or Hold’em Manager to analyze your game and gain useful statistics about the tendencies of your opponents.

Finally, make sure you’re playing with rakeback and taking full advantage of poker room VIP
systems! It’s impossible to stress this enough – for many high-volume players, rakeback can actually make the difference between a losing and winning player. It’s also important to take advantage of promotions that online poker rooms offer. If you don’t do these things, you’re simply leaving cash on the table.

That’s why we moved the Origin of Cool headquarters to Austin, Texas!! The British Government plans for all homes to have a smart meter installed by 2019 and British Gas are giving Brits a head start with some great money saving and hassle-free benefits. Their meters come with a handy smart energy monitor that shows the exact energy you’re using. That way it saves you valuable pounds and pennies.

What is a smart meter?
They are clever devices that communicate to an in-home display unit (a Smart Energy Monitor), giving you an instant view of your energy consumption for both gas and electricity.

Want to know how much energy the UK is wasting every year? Check out the following infographic:

The Smart Revolution is the biggest infrastructure programme in the UK since the 1970’s, when the nation switched from coal to natural gas as main fuel. Smart meters are also instrumental in enabling Britain to upgrade its National Grid. If you want to pre-register for a smart meter you can do so by entering your details here.

The Oxford Economics Report

Oxford Economics were commissioned to investigate the value of smart metering to Britain and the results were extremely positive. British homes and businesses could be nearly £14 billion better off thanks to the roll out of smart meters.

Key benefits of smart meters:
- £11.2 billion in energy savings for households and businesses.
- £10.7 billion in efficiency savings for energy suppliers.
- £3.2 billion in generation related savings.

Smart meter FAQs:

Q. Is it going to cost anything for the exchange?
No – there is no upfront cost involved for the meter exchange. You will pay for your smart meters (one far gas and one for electricity) through your energy bills in the exact same way as you pay for your current meters.

Q. Why is British Gas changing the meters? (What are the benefits?)
British Gas are exchanging meters as part of Government mandate and are currently targeting old meters that have reached their shelf life. Smart meters provide a range of benefits that help you see and understand the energy you’re using as you use it. Smart meters also help you to be in control of your energy in order to help you make real savings. You can register your interest for a smart meter here

Q. Will having a smart meter affect my bills?
A smart meter won’t affect your bills but it will allow you to see the energy you are using via a smart energy monitor; which means you might be able to be more cost efficient and save money on your bills.

Q. My meters are outside; do I have to be there when they are being exchanged?
Yes – even if your meters are outside you will still need to be present during the exchange. This will help you to fully understand how to make the most out of your new smart meter.

Q. Will I still be able to update my readings online and receive Nectar points?
You will still receive your nectar points but as smart meters send us your meter readings automatically you will no longer need to submit these online.

Q. How long will the exchange take?
The exchange will take 90 minutes on average to complete.

Q. Can I have the meters installed at the same time?

Yes – both your gas and electricity meters can be fitted during the same appointment unless there are any complications on the day of exchange.

Victorian hipster and artist Oscar Wilde once said, “A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament”. Unique individuals will often, by nature, stray from the commercialism of mainstream books, films and music. Often, they identify in art that is more secluded and sui generis. For those who find themselves staring at a music collection that is anything but Jay-Z and Lady Gaga, your tastes are indeed specific, and more than likely it takes great deal for you to be impressed by a music artist and like his/her work. If you want to make your search simple then grab free music downloads @ KazaGold where you can discover artists that are enjoyed by a limited group of admirers. This article will address some concerns that apply to choosing a free music download site, and strive to set you on your path to finding another unique artist who plays in tune to the fabric of your being.

Too Many Choices, I Give Up

Not so fast. If you wear sandals and wool beanies at the same time, then you will definitely want the down low on the differences that dwell between various free music download websites. First of all, some of these companies use the term “free” as a marketing ploy to draw people in. It turns out their sites do not let you really download music for free. Although they may not charge you a fee for each individual song you download, they will charge you a monthly membership fee. And let’s face it; the market is saturated with so much terrible commercialized garbage that paying a monthly fee doesn’t benefit someone with refined tastes who might (if they are lucky) find 2 or 3 songs a month that are apropos to their unique standards. Finding a site that offers free music downloads with no hidden fees is the way to go.

Another thing to consider is quantity. Remember, for every 1000 songs there may only be one you like. Most company’s media libraries have 1 or 2 million songs. Look for a truly free site that more than triples this number. The more tracks they offer, the better your chances of binding to a newly discovered artist that truly moves you.

Go Explore

The experimental music you love is abundant on free music download sites, as these artists truly just care about sharing their music with others. They are not looking to get rich and board private jets. As someone who turns my nose up at almost everything I hear on the radio, let me give a personal recommendation: Lost Civilizations, featured in Sound Click, is an experimental music project that I doubt you have heard of. This project is a collaboration between Mike Sebastian and T.A.Zook. You won’t find them on iTunes, but you can catch them playing around the Washington DC Metro and Baltimore area. Their music can also be discovered on free music download sites. Do your diligent research, find a download site that is truly free, and go seek out these artists who want only to be heard.

From the beginning of movement, clothing adapted and adorned for dancing or movement activity became the basis of ‘dancewear’, and even some of what is seen today in the twenty-first century.

Early traditional ballet, dating as far back as the 1800s saw courtly influences of much longer skirts than are seen today in terms of tutus, and satin ballet slippers for females. Similarities in footwear, as well as that of males dressing in tights and long-sleeved shirts with occasional jackets, demonstrate the loyalty dance has to its originators in some cases, and how practical the first strands and instances of dance were.

The mid-1800s saw choreographer of La Sylphide August Bournonville designing the ballet slippers for males that are still worn today with a V-shaped vamp to give the illusion of a long and pointed foot. The Romantic tutu also gave an appearance, but under another name primarily.

Today, the traditional ballet style has been adopted and brought into the fashion world with ballet pumps for every day wear, tutu style skirts and the highest of top knots as ‘on trend’ hairstyles. Even celebrities are making ballet cool – see Eva Mendes and Rhianna snapped in sleek hair and a ballet tutu.

The 1890s saw the emergence of Jazz dance, and it became increasingly popular, taught in numerous dance studios and appearing in Broadway and musical comedies. Costumes were experimented with, open to more adventurous design work and also more practical, highlighting the dancers’ lines in addition to looking effective and eye-catching. Every Winter, we see the latest sequined dressed out for Christmas parties, bling on the jewellery stands and sky scraper heels getting higher and higher every season.

Modern dance, now known as contemporary dance, developed as a result of Isadora Duncan’s rejection of the tight bodices of the tutus of classical ballet in favour of Greek-style tunics, sometimes even bare-chested. She believed tight clothing was a restriction to the body’s natural movement and to this day we see this trend, especially those in the hip hop world. How often do you see the likes of JLo and Nicole Sherzinger working out in a baggy tunic, loose clothing or harem pants?

Moving into the mid-1900s, leotards were also designed further, introducing more styles to the markets and becoming the basis of the wide variety of choice available today. Leotards were given the ability to stretch, in addition to ballet tights becoming more comfortable. Katy Perry in that catsuit? We all remember that!

So the answer to the question, ‘when did dance wear become cool?, is that it always has. People make fashion from fashion and will continue to do so time and time again!

What would our lives be like without our beloved electronics? If they were to suddenly to disappear right now, we’d end up bumbling about in the dark realising we really have no idea what we’re doing. A depressing thought, so let’s have a look at some of the gadgets and electronics which manage to hold us back from reverting to cavemen.

The Telephone

Long gone are the days of telegrams and messengers on horseback. Nowadays you can call up and annoy your friends even if they’re on the other side of the planet (if you don’t mind paying the bill). With the invention of the cordless phone people became free to dawdle about their house as they waited for an hour on hold to customer service. It’s a device we very much take for granted and that makes our lives a lot easier. In pre-home telephone times, making a doctor’s appointment, talking to your mother and finding out the price of a theatre ticket involved three separate trips. Now, you can do it in front of the TV eating a bag of crisps.

The Computer

Relatively a newcomer to the home environment, but it is no considered an essential to many. The sum of human knowledge is at the finger tips of every woman and man. Whether it be the history of the Byzantine Empire or the schematics of a particle collider, it’s all there and available to you. You could study the depths of the universe or read the world’s greatest literature. It is a tool that could help further your mind like nothing else. Despite this being the case, most people are happy to play Farmville and laugh at pictures of cats in boxes.

The Television

What would we do without this beautiful entertainment device? We’d probably have to go outside and entertain ourselves. That is obviously not an attractive option to many people, so the TV is a great way to sit back, relax and watch other people parade around for you pleasure. Of course, aside from the entertainment part, it is a very important piece of equipment. The news works as a great way to keep people up-to-date with what’s going on in the world. More importantly, during a natural disaster it is a super way to disseminate essential information.

Digital Camera

Cameras have been a staple of the home for years and years, but they were usually only dug out of drawers for a special occasion. Then the films would be left lying around for ages as no one could be bothered to get them developed and 5 years later you wonder why there are no pictures of your 30th birthday. With digital cameras there isn’t this problem. You can take loads more photos, easily get them off the camera and there’s no worry of the developing process going wrong. There also much quicker as well, so when your kid suddenly takes his first steps you can capture a shot without first faffing about putting a new film in your camera.

Calculator

This may not seem like it fits on the list, but come on. Just admit the fact that you’ve pretty much forgotten everything you’ve learnt about maths since you left school apart from adding and subtracting (and then even that can be a struggle). Ask someone to do long division that hasn’t just learnt it that week and they’ll have no idea what they’re doing. With bills to work out and forms to fill in, we all go straight for the calculator. Without it our paperwork would be so inaccurate we’d never get anything right.

Volvo’s new ad is one that will get your heart racing. The Swedish car company hired Hollywood stunt director Peter Pedrero to create one of the coolest commercials we’ve seen in a while.
The setup:
- Two speeding semi trucks
- one pro tightrope walker
- one line attached between the two trucks

Travelling at exactly the same speed, precision drivers keep the trucks aligned as the tightrope walker attempts to get from one truck to the other. This would be difficult enough it wasn’t for a slight problem: she has to get there before they hit a tunnel and the line breaks! Watch this high octane video to see what I’m talking about!

There is no point being a celebrity unless you get to have the best treats when it really matters. And when does it matter more than when celebrating the start of your gilded existence? The crowning glory of a birthday is the cake. An unctuous, sumptuous, towering castle of sponge, creamy filling and icing make us feels like royalty for the day. Little wonder that celebs, who normally feel pretty special, are demanding ever more elaborate cakes.

Just think about the cake that Boy George had made for his 50th birthday by celebrated London cake-maker Choccywoccydoodah. This vast gateau was vibrant in dripping pink and yellow, bedecked with flowers with a round, colourful, edible portrait of his fully made up Chameleon-ness in a pink hat (perfectly, a small green reptile sat atop). It embodied all that is best about The Boy in one delectable confection.

So, what should other celebs have as the perfect cake for them? Take, for example our current golden wonder, Jessica Ennis. Queen of the London 2012 Olympics games, her ideal birthday cake should feature a super-tasty heptathlon, with a chocolate straw javelin, a marzipan hurdle, a popping candy sandpit… the works. As long as somewhere amongst the candy heaven there lies a huge, golden chocolate coin.

Or how about someone not so sugar and spice? Equally delicious, according to teenage girls, is Harry Styles, the exuberantly coiffed 1D ladies’ man. His treat should be a moist apple cake to remind him of his favourite juice, covered in orange icing, his fave colour, covered in lots of chocolate curls around a big chewy mic. Or maybe it should have big cat on it, to symbolise his famous prowling for the fairer sex….perhaps a marzipan cougar?

Victoria Beckham would be a challenge to bake for – do they make carb-free cakes? Still, the no-flour base would be beautifully decorated, with a silken layer of royal icing, being snipped at by silver candy dressmakers’ scissors, scattered all over with Golden Balls.

A real man’s-man cake would be fun to create. Daniel Craig’s birthday cake would be a pistol-shaped sponge soaked in gin and vermouth, topped with bikini-clad marzipan babes lounging on union jack beach towels, the whole exploding with mini-fireworks instead of candles. Ideally it would be baked on the overheated engine of an Aston Martin, for added authenticity.

Danny ‘is-he-a-Sir-yet?’ Boyle deserves a cake, birthday or not, after all the stress he must have suffered to create his Opening Ceremony masterpiece. Let’s give him a soothing Earl Grey-infused sponge, wound about with spun-sugar strips of film for old time’s sake. Then, just when he least expects it, we’ll have Her Majesty jump out…. Well, he did it for us!

Whatever the style and flavour, a no-holds-barred baked treat is just what is needed to delight any starry British birthday boy or girl. A personalised birthday cake is cheaper than a night at Bouji’s, tailor-made and tasty too – absolutely perfect.

Tresor Paris is an elegant brand that combines high style with wearable pieces that complement any outfit. Made from Kevlar (the material that is used for bulletproof vests), Tresor necklaces, bracelets and rings are adorned with precious and semi-precious stones to add a touch of sparkle to your everyday look. The stars are snapping up Tresor products, here are our six favourite celeb looks:

1. Man of the moment Tinchy Stryder has a great casual look, and his darker shade of Tresor jewellery perfectly complements his t-shirt/jacket combo. A touch of sparkle lifts the whole outfit with a bit of bling!

2. The gorgeous Delta Goodrem is our second fave fashion pick, as she arrives in low-key style to host The Voice Australia. Delta wears the Tresor Paris Monaco bracelet, which comprises nine white spheres covered in crystals, woven together with a strong black cord. Delta’s relaxed style works perfectly, with black accents throughout a more neutral palette.

3. Another Aussie who makes our style stakes is Keith Urban (Nicole Kidman’s other half!). Keith is a judge on the panel of The Voice Australia (they know how to dress, these Voice judges!), and his rocky style is perfectly complemented by the dark colours of a Tresor magnetite bracelet. Most Tresor bracelets are threaded together with cord (like Keith’s), which makes them adjustable so that you can get a good fit.

4. A firm favourite with the ladies, Simon Webbe pulls off a Tresor necklace with a casual white shirt for his appearance on ITV’s Loose Women. Simple, yet very effective!

5. Rebecca Maguire (Miss Ireland, 2012), has been spotted picking up some Tresor to wear at the Miss World pageant in August! The Irish beauty chose the Neptune Collection set, featuring Tresor’s signature white crystal covered spheres – perhaps to ensure that it matches the many outfits she’ll have to sport during the contest!

6. Our final style pick is girl band, Primrose Hill. A recent magazine shoot saw them rocking the British vibe and sporting a range of Union Jack themed jewellery by Tresor. The perfect way to show some support for Team GB this year!

The word “cool” has survived a lot of tough competition and is said to have originated from jazz in the 40s. The fascinating thing about the expression is that it does not have one meaning. It can be applied to pretty much anything ranging from how you feel, to describing something.

Cool can be used to describe how a person remains calm, stoic and resilient under pressure. When applied to popular culture, it means that something is trendy, en vogue and has been incubated by early adopters. If used to describe an object or person, it means it has strong aesthetic appeal and is attractive and remarkable.

Language has always fascinated me so I thought I would bring you Origin of Cool’s glossary of cool as a way to see what words have come and gone and to act as a thesaurus of words that are closely related to the word cool. Enjoy!

A-1 - the best e.g. “This sandwich is A-1!”
Ace - great e.g. “The gig was ace” (occasionally in my childhood in England I would hear “that was dead ace!”)
Bitchin’ - very good, excellent e.g. “That was a bitchin’ set of waves” (used by Californian surfers in the ’80s)
Bodacious - combining the words “bold” and “audacious” e.g. “She is one bodacious babe”.
Boss – slang expression for excellent e.g. “This party was pretty boss” (heard frequently in Liverpool, England)
Cat’s Pajamas - the hottest new thing e.g. “His suit was the cat’s pajamas” (stemming from 1920s America, young women would combine an animal with a a part of the human body or item of clothing. Another example is “bees knees”).
Champion - best, excellent e.g. “That were a champion performance” (used especially by people in Yorkshire, England)
Dandy – fine e.g. “Fine and dandy”
Far Out – unbelievable, amazing e.g. “That movie was far out” (often used by hippies)
Gnarly – extreme, very good, excellent e.g. “That skateboarding trick was so gnarly!” (heard frequently in 1970s surf speak and in skate parks in 1990s America).
Hip – cooler than cool e.g. “This party is going to be hip” (often linked to hipsters who are purveyors of trends and cutting edge fashion).
Hunky-dory – satisfactory/agreeable e.g. “It’s all hunky-dory” (possible origins of the expression are the Netherlands – the Dutch brought the word “honk” meaning goal or home to New York. American sailors combined the word “hunk” meaning fine with the Japanese expression for road “dori” to create “hunky dory” – a Japanese street of pleasure.
Neat – held in great respect e.g. “That was a nifty move”
Rad – abbreviation of the word “radical” e.g. “That was totally rad” (made popular by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1990).

For the launch of Lynx’s first female fragrance (Lynx Anarchy), the deodorant company gave hundreds of pink and blue polarised sunglasses to Sydneysiders. The question that most of the public were asking is “why would I wear sunglasses at night?!” Well Lynx set up hacked LCD screens in a Sydney house so that when the shades were worn, you could see steamy and weird visuals in each window.
