Urban Cassettes: Eco Friendly Artwork

Having seen the rise of designer toys like Munny’s and Dunny’s, a new trend that Origin of Cool has spotted is eco alternatives to custom/vinyl/designer toys. The designer of these recycled cassette tapes, Igor Filjushin, has created the coolest artwork and laid it over the top of an iconic musical format. In his words, “I found about cool design toys,and wanted to collect and to them but I hadn’t enough money to do this. So years later, I found some tapes and decided to give second life to them instead of putting them in garbage. This is a cheap alternative/ECO toy (because it is recycled in new way). Maybe in the future I will do more of them because I know a lot of places where is possible to find them.”

Fancy some intellectual luxury more than the usual handbag fad? You may be tickled by the thought of carting around a few goodies in your favorite paperback, or should I say, your artistic expression of literary taste.

Talk about intellectual fashion – these bags come hand-crafted as famous literary pieces, unless you’d like to make a request for an inspirational title of your choice. The Lithuanian duo, Aleksandras Pogrebnojus and Vida Simanavičiūtė from A&V, are on to something here. I know they’re not particularly functional – fashion writes its own rules! – but I find them far more sexy than any Kindle carrier I’ve seen!

A trend we’ve seen grow over the last few years is guerilla gardening, where people are actively bringing nature back into the urban jungle. That’s why Suck UK have developed these neat little grenades. They are filled with soil, Buttercup, Ryegrass and Poppy seeds. The grenades are biodegradable, ensuring growing plants are the only things left behind.

In case you haven’t heard of 350.org, it is an organization that was started by US author Bill McKibben. Its aim is to build a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis and ultimately preserve our planet. There have been many great examples of how people from around the world have volunteered to take action and help with 350. I wanted to focus on a trend which emerged where people around the world created scenes and giant 350 number sculptures with the idea that you could see them from space.
