The Live Vibe Collective describe their forté as “matching Austin’s original singer & songwriter talent with special events and private parties.” I described their recent private house concert in West Austin as being one of the most unique gigs I have ever been to. I have seen weird and wonderful concerts and shows in England, Sweden, France, Denmark, Hong Kong and Australia to name but a few. On Saturday 30th June 2012, in the Aqua Verde neighborhood of Austin, Texas, I witnessed something new.
The two musicians playing were Matthew Mayfield and David Ramirez – both singer-songwriters with their own brand of folk. The setting was a private house perched precariously on a hillside overlooking Lake Austin complete with a deck that was perfect for a stage and about 100 music fans. Attendees were greeted with canapés and an open bar – the perfect end to a hard week! Matthew Mayfield was up first and as he drifted effortlessly into his set list, the crowd were treated not only to some great acoustic guitar and husky vocals but also to a serene sunset. His cover of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit was a personal favorite as I had never heard it played like this in such an intimate setting (see video below). Following a short intermission and a chance to explore the wonderful house and sample some culinary delights courtesy of Trento, David Ramirez started his set. Despite the fact that he was mic’ed up, you felt as if he was singing the songs for you. Every word resonated alongside the buzz of the cicadas and you could feel every string being plucked.
A big thank you to Christina Shipley for organizing the event. More info on The Live Vibe Collective can be found on there Facebook page
