Unexpected Live Theater Adaptations
Live theater isn’t for everyone. For some, it makes their hearts flutter and for others it has an opposite brain-glazing effect. We’ve got an appreciation for theater, but we’re not ones to judge if you don’t. Thanks to the creative genius of a few people who both love theater and see room for improvement, these completely unexpected live productions are guaranteed to bring you to laughing hysterics or push your brain to the limits of spontaneous-combustion.
Super Fly is a classic, gritty blaxploitation film about cocaine dealer Youngblood Priest. Even if you haven’t seen the 1972 movie, a musical version of Super Fly has an intriguing ring to it, and is definitely not something you’d expect on Broadway. Bill T. Jones is directing and choreographing and although it’s been in the works for a while producers are expecting a run in New York soon, hopefully.
One of the classic traveling productions and first “reality plays,” Point Break Live! takes its cues directly from the surfer–cop cult classic with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. We won’t reveal all of the awesomeness behind this production, but to give a teaser, Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves’ character) is played by a random audience member, and reads unrehearsed and monotone—a la Reeves himself—for the entire production. It only gets more outrageous and unexpected from there. If you happen to be in LA, Louisville, or Chicago, don’t miss it!
Predator The Musical has two equally great taglines: “If It Sings We Can Kill It,” and “GET TO THE THEATER!” and it’s about as absurd as you can imagine watching a bunch of monster hunting meatheads sing would be, complete with witty one-liners and greased up muscles. It’s coming back for a second run at New Rock Theater in Chicago. Perfect if you feel the need for more Predator in your life.
